West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) is conducting the Clerkship Examination, 2024 for lower division posts under the Government of West Bengal. Although the current application window falls in 2026, the official examination name remains Clerkship Examination, 2024, under Advertisement 12/2024. The recruitment covers the Secretariat, Directorates, district offices and regional offices, including Kolkata.

Posts and Disciplines

• Lower Division Assistant: This is one of the lower division designations covered by the common examination for state government offices. The notice does not assign a separate department to each designation.
• Lower Division Clerk and similar posts: These posts also fall within the common recruitment. Your eventual office allocation depends on the options you give and the positions available to the Commission.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Initial appointment: The notice says appointments will initially be temporary. You should read that condition alongside the rules for the government post to which you are appointed.
• Posting options: You must rank your preferences for Secretariat departments, Directorates, and regional offices including district offices in one district or Kolkata. Allocation follows your merit position and preferences, subject to available posts.
• Regional replacements: Recommendations against positions left vacant because someone does not join are restricted to regional offices under the terms of this notice.
• State reservation: West Bengal reservation benefits for SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer and EWS applicants do not extend to applicants from those categories in other states. Such applicants are treated as general candidates for this recruitment.
• Other reservation provisions: The notice also provides for benchmark disability, ex-servicemen and recognised meritorious sportsperson categories. Actual reservation depends on the positions reported by the government and the applicable rules.
• Language after joining: If you choose Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali instead of Bengali for Group B, you must pass the departmental Bengali examination during probation before confirmation.
• Examination centre: The Commission may assign a nearby centre if your preferred centre cannot accommodate you. Special residence-related restrictions apply to the Darjeeling and Kalimpong centres, and you may attend only the venue printed on your admit card.
• Provisional admission: An admit card does not establish your entitlement to appointment. WBPSC may cancel candidature if it later finds that a claim or condition is not supported.
• Form changes: More than one application from the same person is prohibited. The notified edit facility can be used only once for the fields it permits, so check your details carefully before finalising changes.
• Conduct: Canvassing can disqualify you. Mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth devices and other communication equipment are prohibited at examination premises, and misconduct can affect this and future examinations.
