IIT ISM Project Assistant Mining Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad is taking one Project Assistant through the Office of the Dean, Research and Development for a sponsored study run by the Department of Mining Engineering. The study is funded by Tara Coal Mining Private Limited, Durgapur and watches slope stability at the Tara (East and West) coal mines at Churulia using satellite-based SAR interferometry, or InSAR, alongside ground-based observation methods. Prof. Mohammad Soyeb Alam of the Mining Engineering department runs the study as Project Investigator. If you have an M.Sc. in Data Science and like working with satellite data, this puts you inside a live mine-safety study at one of India's oldest mining institutes.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: The engagement runs till the project closes on 31 March 2028 and gives you no claim to a regular post at the institute.
• Shortlisting: Having the minimum degree does not get you an interview call on its own — the institute shortlists on merit and on what the project needs at that point.
• Interview call: Only shortlisted candidates are told the interview date, and the Project Investigator informs them directly.
• Travel: No TA/DA is paid for attending the interview.
• Stay: You arrange your own stay at Dhanbad if you need one for the interview.
• Tools you will meet: The project runs its InSAR chain on Gamma Remote Sensing software and SNAP, so hands-on time with either one puts you ahead of other candidates.

• Automate the steps involved in the InSAR processing chain
• Prepare the project reports that carry the InSAR findings for the Tara coal mines

• Read InSAR output together with ground-based observation data on slope movement
• Report progress to the Project Investigator in the Department of Mining Engineering
