SSC JE Recruitment 2026: Overview
Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is running a combined examination for Junior Engineer and Scientific Assistant roles across central government offices. The recruitment connects engineering and science graduates with departments working on roads, public buildings, water systems, defence infrastructure, telecommunications, weather services and fisheries. One common examination notice covers every active role, so you can choose the discipline and department preferences that match your qualification.
Posts and Disciplines
- Junior Engineer (Civil): civil works roles are available in organisations such as the Border Roads Organisation, Central Water Commission, CPWD, Military Engineer Services, NTRO and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
- Junior Engineer (Electrical): these roles support electrical systems in CPWD, the Central Water and Power Research Station, DGQA-NAVAL, Farakka Barrage and the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.
- Junior Engineer (Mechanical): mechanical engineering work is linked to the Central Water Commission and DGQA-NAVAL.
- Junior Engineer (Electrical and Mechanical): the Border Roads Organisation and Military Engineer Services use this combined discipline for equipment, services and infrastructure work.
- Junior Engineer (Telecom): the Department of Telecommunications role focuses on telecom and allied technology work.
- Scientific Assistant: India Meteorological Department candidates may come from physics, computer science, electronics, communication, instrumentation or related technology streams.
Post-wise Duties
Junior Engineer
You will help plan, supervise and maintain civil, electrical, mechanical or telecom assets for the department that receives your nomination. The exact mix may include site measurements, estimates, quality checks, work records, contractor coordination and routine inspections.
Scientific Assistant
You will support weather observation and technical operations in the India Meteorological Department. Your work may involve instruments, scientific data, communication systems and operational records according to your chosen stream.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Department allocation: SSC recommends selected candidates to participating user departments, which then complete document checks and appointment formalities.
- Discipline choice: your Paper I and Paper II technical subject must match the option selected in the online form; the chosen stream cannot be changed later.
- Experience timing: where a post asks for work experience, only experience gained after completing the relevant qualification is counted; internships or training completed during the course do not count.
- BRO restriction: only male candidates can choose Junior Engineer posts in the Border Roads Organisation, and those candidates must clear its separate fitness standards.
- Transfer liability: Border Roads Organisation appointments carry all-India transfer liability and may include service in high-altitude or hard areas.
- Final allocation: post allocation follows merit and the preferences submitted by you, subject to eligibility and available departmental requirements.
Application Submission Notes
You need an active SSC One-Time Registration on the Commission's current portal before filling the examination form. The old SSC registration does not work on the new portal, and the form may also be completed through the mySSC mobile application.
