NIF Scientist Recruitment 2026: Overview

National Innovation Foundation - India (NIF), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, is recruiting Scientists in three grades at its Gandhinagar campus through open competition. The work sits at the meeting point of formal science and grassroots creativity: teams assess ideas developed by farmers, artisans and community innovators, then help turn promising concepts into tested products, evidence or policy inputs. This is a broad interdisciplinary drive covering biological, agricultural, environmental, engineering, pharmaceutical and veterinary fields, so you should match your academic discipline carefully with the relevant post code before applying.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Scientist D, impact and policy research: leads evidence-based studies, programme evaluation and field research connected with grassroots innovators and rural institutions.
  • Scientist C, rural engineering: works on machinery, devices, prototypes and the validation of technologies designed for practical use outside the laboratory.
  • Scientist C, biological crop protection: evaluates botanical or microbial crop-protection ideas and supports laboratory, field and intellectual-property work.
  • Scientist C, traditional health technologies: handles scientific validation, quality systems and development work around community health practices and herbal products.
  • Scientist B, biological and biotechnology fields: documents indigenous knowledge, checks prior art and supports field trials and adoption studies.
  • Scientist B, agriculture: focuses on crop practices, indigenous plant varieties, field validation and technical documentation.
  • Scientist B, mechanical and agricultural engineering: develops and tests devices, drawings and prototypes with innovators and fabricators.
  • Scientist B, veterinary science: supports scientific assessment and field validation of traditional veterinary practices and herbal technologies.

Post-wise Duties

Scientist D

You will guide multi-institutional research and impact assessment, shape policy or programme outputs, and coordinate field engagement in rural, remote or tribal areas. The role also calls for clear research reports that decision-makers and partner institutions can use.

Scientist C

You will manage specialist validation and product-development work in your assigned engineering, crop-protection or traditional-health stream. Depending on the post code, this can include prototype review, laboratory and field testing, regulatory documentation, quality systems and coordination with research or industry partners.

Scientist B

You will carry out hands-on research, documentation and technical assessment with innovators, farmers and institutions. Your stream may involve prior-art searches, crop trials, product design, performance testing or veterinary field studies, with findings recorded in usable technical reports.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Post choice: you may apply for only one post; if you send more than one application, NIF will consider just one under the notice's stated priority rule.
  • Experience counting: professional experience is counted after the essential qualification, and experience gained during a full-time degree does not count.
  • Shortlisting: meeting the minimum conditions does not guarantee a call; NIF may use academic record, publications, research work and relevant experience to limit the field.
  • Reserve panel: the approved panel remains valid for one year and may be used for later vacancies arising during that period.
  • Serving employees: government, PSU, autonomous-body and publicly funded institution staff need a No Objection Certificate or an undertaking to produce it at interview.
  • Travel: NIF will not provide TA, DA or accommodation for a test or interview.
  • Foreign qualifications: you need an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities or the relevant recognised council.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or support research in the discipline linked to your post code
  • Assess grassroots innovations through laboratory, field and prior-art studies
  • Design and monitor validation trials with innovators and partner institutions
  • Prepare technical reports, research papers and evidence-based recommendations
  • Coordinate with farmers, artisans, researchers, industry and regulatory bodies
  • Support intellectual-property, product-development and scale-up activities
  • Keep accurate records of methods, results and stakeholder consultations
