WBPSC English Stenographer Recruitment 2026: Overview

Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC) has opened the English Stenographer (Basic Grade) in Schedule A and B Recruitment Examination, 2025. Selected candidates join the state government as Personal Assistants in the Schedule A or Schedule B English Stenographer cadre, so this is a regular state government job, not a contract post.

The exam has three papers: General English first, then Dictation and Transcription and Computer Typing for the candidates who clear the first paper. Your final rank comes from the marks of all three papers added together, and the written paper is planned at centres in Kolkata. If you passed Madhyamik, can type in English on a computer and can read, write and speak Bengali, this drive is worth a close look.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Schedule A English Stenographer: you work with senior officers, such as Secretaries, Special Secretaries and Joint Secretaries of the Secretariat departments, the Governor's Secretariat, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Secretariat and WBPSC itself. Schedule A also covers stenographers for heads of directorates such as the Director General of Police, the Commissioner of Police Kolkata, Chief Engineers of PWD and Irrigation, the Director of Health Services, Divisional Commissioners and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.
  • Schedule B English Stenographer: you work in the headquarters offices of the heads of directorates that are not listed in Schedule A. You may also work with directorate officers of ex-officio Joint Secretary rank, or in any other stenographer post outside Schedule A.
  • Reserved seats in both schedules: some posts in each schedule are kept for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (40% and above) and for Meritorious Sportspersons in 20 listed sports, including athletics, football, cricket, kabaddi and archery.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Bengali language: you must be able to read, write and speak Bengali. Candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali do not need Bengali. If your mother tongue is neither Bengali nor Nepali, your Bengali is tested at the computer typing stage, and a poor result can cancel your candidature.
  • Reservation is for West Bengal only: EWS, SC, ST and OBC (non-creamy layer) benefits go only to candidates of West Bengal. Reserved-category candidates from other states are treated as unreserved.
  • Certificates: your category, PwBD or sports certificate must come from a competent authority of West Bengal and be issued on or before the closing date. OBC candidates must also submit a renewed non-creamy layer certificate before the computer typing test.
  • Serving staff: permanent Schedule B Stenographers, Typists, Steno-Typists and Clerk-cum-Typists already working for the West Bengal government have no upper age limit.
  • Penalty for identity marks: if you write your name or roll number, or put any identifying mark, in an answer script, 10% of the paper's full marks is deducted.
  • Tie-breaking: when two candidates have the same total, the one with more marks in Dictation and Transcription ranks higher. After that, typing marks, typing accuracy, typing speed and finally age decide the tie.
  • Before appointment: you must pass a Medical Board fitness check and a police antecedent verification. An unfit or adverse report cancels your candidature.

Application Submission Notes

WBPSC accepts applications online only, and more than one application from the same candidate can be cancelled. Once you submit, the form is final, except for a one-time edit window that you open by logging in to your own account on psc.wb.gov.in. For help, write to pscwbit01@gmail.com on any working day between 11 am and 4 pm.
