The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Junior Engineer (JE) examination every year to fill engineering positions across various central government departments and organizations. SSC is India's largest recruitment body for Group B and Group C posts, and the JE exam is one of its most popular technical examinations. Through this recruitment, selected candidates get posted in departments like CPWD, MES, BRO, CWC, CGWB, and other central government bodies. The exam covers three engineering branches: Civil & Structural, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Vacancy Breakdown by Discipline

The exact vacancy numbers for SSC JE 2026 will be released with the official notification. Based on SSC JE 2025, vacancies were distributed as follows:

• Civil & Structural Engineering: Majority of vacancies (approximately 1335 posts in 2025) across departments like CPWD, BRO, and CWC
• Electrical Engineering: Posts in departments like MES, CPWD, and other central organizations
• Mechanical Engineering: Posts in MES, BRO, and other engineering departments

Key Departments:

• Border Roads Organisation (BRO): Largest share of vacancies, primarily for Civil and E&M posts
• Central Public Works Department (CPWD): Civil engineering posts for infrastructure projects
• Military Engineer Services (MES): Posts across all three engineering branches
• Central Water Commission (CWC): Civil engineering posts for water resource projects
• Central Ground Water Board (CGWB): Civil engineering and mechanical posts

Who Can Apply?

• Educational Qualification: You need a Diploma (3-year) or a Degree (B.E./B.Tech) in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
• Nationality: You must be a citizen of India. Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling are also eligible.
• Note: Candidates who are appearing in their final year of qualifying examination may also apply provisionally.

Age Limit

• You should be at least 18 years old and not more than 32 years old as on the cut-off date specified in the notification.
• Note: The upper age limit is 30 years for most posts. For posts in CPWD, it is 32 years.
• Age Relaxation:
• SC/ST: 5 years
• OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
• PwBD (Unreserved): 10 years
• PwBD + OBC: 13 years
• PwBD + SC/ST: 15 years
• Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of military service rendered

Salary

• Selected candidates will get a basic pay of Rs. 35,400 per month under Level-6 (Rs. 35,400 - Rs. 1,12,400) of the 7th Central Pay Commission with a Grade Pay of Rs. 4,200.
• Along with basic pay, you will receive Dearness Allowance (DA) at 58% of basic pay, House Rent Allowance (HRA) varying from 10% to 30% depending on your posting city, and Transport Allowance.
• Your gross monthly salary will be approximately Rs. 67,000 to Rs. 77,000 including all allowances.
• In-hand salary after deductions (NPS, CGHS, CGEGIS) is approximately Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 62,000 depending on your posting location.

• Female candidates (all categories): No fee (Exempted)

Selection Process

The selection will be done in 3 stages:

1. Paper-I (Computer Based Examination): 200 questions for 200 marks in 2 hours. This paper tests General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and your chosen Engineering discipline (Civil & Structural / Electrical / Mechanical). Negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
2. Paper-II (Computer Based Examination): 100 questions for 300 marks in 2 hours. This is a technical paper on your chosen engineering discipline. Negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer.
3. Document Verification and Medical Examination: Candidates who qualify Paper-II are called for document verification and medical fitness check. Department allocation is done based on your final merit and preference.

How to Apply

1. Go to the SSC portal at ssc.gov.in.
2. Complete your One Time Registration (OTR) if you are a new user. If already registered, log in with your Registration Number and Password.
3. Click on the "Apply" tab and select "Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical & Electrical) Examination, 2026".
4. Fill in the application form with your personal details, educational qualifications, and choose your engineering discipline.
5. Upload your photograph and signature as per the specified dimensions.
6. Pay the application fee of Rs. 100 online (if applicable).
7. Review your application, submit it, and take a printout for your records.
