The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Junior Engineer (JE) examination every year to fill engineering positions across various central government departments and organizations. Who Can Apply?

  • Educational Qualification: You need a Diploma (3-year) or a Degree (B.E./B.Tech) in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
  • Nationality: You must be a citizen of India. Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling are also eligible.
  • Note: Candidates who are appearing in their final year of qualifying examination may also apply provisionally.

Age Limit

  • You should be at least 18 years old and not more than 32 years old as on the cut-off date specified in the notification.
  • Note: The upper age limit is 30 years for most posts. For posts in CPWD, it is 32 years.
  • Age Relaxation:
  • SC/ST: 5 years
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
  • PwBD (Unreserved): 10 years
  • PwBD + OBC: 13 years
  • PwBD + SC/ST: 15 years
  • Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of military service rendered

Salary

  • Selected candidates will get a basic pay of Rs. 35,400 per month under Level-6 (Rs. 35,400 - Rs. 1,12,400) of the 7th Central Pay Commission with a Grade Pay of Rs. 4,200.
  • Along with basic pay, you will receive Dearness Allowance (DA) at 58% of basic pay, House Rent Allowance (HRA) varying from 10% to 30% depending on your posting city, and Transport Allowance.
  • Your gross monthly salary will be approximately Rs. 67,000 to Rs. 77,000 including all allowances.
  • In-hand salary after deductions (NPS, CGHS, CGEGIS) is approximately Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 62,000 depending on your posting location.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in 3 stages:

  1. Paper-I (Computer Based Examination): 200 questions for 200 marks in 2 hours. This paper tests General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and your chosen Engineering discipline (Civil & Structural / Electrical / Mechanical). Negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
  2. Paper-II (Computer Based Examination): 100 questions for 300 marks in 2 hours. This is a technical paper on your chosen engineering discipline. Negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer.
  3. Document Verification and Medical Examination: Candidates who qualify Paper-II are called for document verification and medical fitness check. Department allocation is done based on your final merit and preference.

  1. Go to the SSC portal at ssc.gov.in.
  2. Complete your One Time Registration (OTR) if you are a new user. If already registered, log in with your Registration Number and Password.
  3. Click on the "Apply" tab and select "Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical & Electrical) Examination, 2026".
  4. Fill in the application form with your personal details, educational qualifications, and choose your engineering discipline.
  5. Upload your photograph and signature as per the specified dimensions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and inspect civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering works at assigned project sites
  • Prepare detailed estimates, drawings, and project reports for government construction and maintenance works
  • Monitor quality of materials used in construction and ensure compliance with engineering specifications
  • Maintain records of daily progress, material consumption, and expenditure on assigned projects
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and senior engineers to ensure timely completion of projects
  • Conduct site measurements and verify bills submitted by contractors before processing payments
  • Assist in planning and execution of road construction, building works, or electrical installations as per department requirements

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Diploma (3-year) or B.E./B.Tech in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution

Preferred Qualification

B.E./B.Tech degree holders may have preference over Diploma holders for certain departments

Required Skills

Engineering drawing, AutoCAD, site supervision, knowledge of relevant IS codes and standards

Exam Pattern

The SSC JE examination consists of two papers, both conducted as Computer Based Tests (CBT).

Paper-I (Tier-I)

Paper-I has 200 objective-type questions for 200 marks. You will get 2 hours to complete this paper.

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 50 questions (50 marks)
  • General Awareness: 50 questions (50 marks)
  • Part A - Civil & Structural Engineering: 100 questions (100 marks) OR
  • Part B - Electrical Engineering: 100 questions (100 marks) OR
  • Part C - Mechanical Engineering: 100 questions (100 marks)

Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong answer.

Paper-II (Tier-II)

Paper-II has 100 objective-type questions for 300 marks. You will get 2 hours to complete this paper.

  • Mechanical Engineering: 100 questions (300 marks)

Negative Marking: 1 mark deducted for each wrong answer.

Exam Language: English and Hindi

Total Marks: Paper-I (200) + Paper-II (300) = 500 marks. Final merit is based on combined score of both papers.
