National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) has released notification for Research Associate (RA) / Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF) positions at Gadanki, Andhra Pradesh. NARL Research Associate / Post Doctoral Fellow Recruitment 2026
National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) is an autonomous centre of excellence under the Department of Space, Government of India. Located in Gadanki, Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, NARL carries out front-ranking research in atmospheric sciences and develops cutting-edge technology for weather and climate studies. The laboratory is equipped with sophisticated instruments including MST Radar, Lidars, Airglow instruments, Microwave Radiometers, and high-performance computing systems. This is a fellowship-based position where you will work on research proposals in areas like aerosols, trace gases, cloud processes, middle atmospheric dynamics, ionospheric plasma physics, and space weather.
Who Can Apply?
Option 1 - Ph.D. Route:
- Qualification: First class (60% or above) in postgraduate degree plus Ph.D. in Physics, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Space Physics, Signal Processing, Computational Electromagnetics, or Instrumentation.
- If you have submitted your Ph.D. thesis and are awaiting the final viva, you can still apply. However, you will receive a reduced fellowship amount until the degree is awarded.
Option 2 - M.E./M.Tech Route:
- Qualification: First class (60% or above) in M.E./M.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Remote Sensing, Optical Engineering, or Microwave Engineering.
- Experience: At least 3 years of research experience and minimum one research paper published in a Science Citation Index (SCI) journal.
You must also submit a detailed research proposal along with your application, outlining objectives, present understanding, gap areas, methodology, and expected outcomes.
Age Limit
- You should be less than 35 years old at the time of submitting your application.
- SC/ST candidates: 5 years age relaxation (up to 40 years)
- OBC candidates: 3 years age relaxation (up to 38 years)
- Ex-Servicemen and PwBD: Age relaxation as per Government of India orders
Fellowship Amount
- Research Associate-I: Rs. 58,000 per month
- Research Associate-II: Rs. 61,000 per month
- Research Associate-III: Rs. 67,000 per month
- Plus House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per Central Government norms applicable at the place of work
- Medical Allowance: As applicable at the host institution
- Note: DA, Leave Travel Concession, and retirement benefits are not applicable for fellowship positions.
The level at which you are placed (RA-I, RA-II, or RA-III) depends on your qualification, experience, and the decision of the institute. Candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. but are awaiting final viva will receive a reduced fellowship amount.
Selection Process
Selection will be based on the following:
- Screening of Applications: Your research proposal, publications, and academic record will be evaluated.
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview at NARL, Gadanki.
- Document Verification: Original certificates and documents will be verified during the selection process.
There is no written exam for this position. Selection is purely based on your research profile and interview performance.

Responsibilities
- Conduct independent and collaborative research in atmospheric sciences and related fields at NARL, Gadanki
- Prepare and execute research proposals covering objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes
- Analyze observational and experimental data collected from NARL instruments such as MST Radar, Lidars, and Radiometers
- Develop numerical models and computational tools for atmospheric and space science studies
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed international journals and present at scientific conferences
- Assist in the operation, calibration, and maintenance of sophisticated research instruments
- Prepare periodic progress reports and submit them to the sponsoring agency
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
Ph.D. in Physics/Atmospheric Science/Meteorology/Space Physics or First Class M.E./M.Tech with 3 years research experience
Preferred Qualification
Published research papers in SCI journals, experience with atmospheric observation instruments and numerical modeling
Required Skills
Research methodology, scientific writing, data analysis, atmospheric science instrumentation

Salary & Compensation
Pay Scale
RA-I: Rs. 58,000 | RA-II: Rs. 61,000 | RA-III: Rs. 67,000 per month
Allowances
House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per Central Government norms. Medical allowance as per host institution rules. No DA, LTC, or retirement benefits.
