IIT Mandi JRF Quantum Computing Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) is hiring a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) for a quantum computing project at its Center for Quantum Science and Technologies in Kamand, Himachal Pradesh. Led by Dr. Jaskaran Singh, the project receives support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), National Quantum Mission (NQM).

The research brings together quantum optics, photonics and quantum computing to develop variational quantum algorithms using a linear optical computing architecture. Its focus is on designing, implementing and benchmarking variational quantum eigensolvers on indigenous noisy intermediate scale quantum devices for chemical and strategic applications.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Initial appointment: You would join on a project contract for 12 months, or until the project ends if that happens sooner. The initial appointment does not cover the entire project automatically.
  • Renewal: Further service may run for additional months or years, depending on satisfactory performance and the project's remaining duration. Keep this performance-linked arrangement in mind when considering the role.
  • Project duration: The research programme runs for 36 months, with its scheduled end on 13 August 2029. This is the project's timeframe; your own appointment remains subject to the initial term and renewal conditions.
  • Joining requirement: If selected, you are expected to join within 18 days of the selection or intimation letter. Missing that window may lead to cancellation of your offer and an offer to the next person on the merit list.
  • Possible doctoral admission: The selected fellow may be considered for the institute's Ph.D. programme. Admission depends on IIT Mandi's own conditions and procedures, so the fellowship offer does not itself guarantee a doctoral place.
  • Provisional appointment: Your selection remains provisional until the institute checks the supporting evidence at joining. Incorrect information or discrepancies may lead to cancellation of your candidature or appointment.
  • Recruitment changes: IIT Mandi can choose whether to fill the position and can change, cancel or end this recruitment exercise. The notice does not promise an appointment simply because the research opening has been advertised.

Required Skills

Preferred: quantum optics and photonics, quantum information, quantum computing, quantum communications or physics; scientific programming with Python, Julia, MATLAB or Mathematica.
