About This Job

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is hiring 32 Post-Doctoral Fellows under the Raja Jwala Prasad Post-Doctoral Fellowship (RJP-PDF) scheme across departments in Varanasi. If you have a PhD in a relevant subject and at least 2 published papers in Q1/Q2 or Scopus/Web of Science journals, you can apply offline by post. The last date for your application to reach BHU is 21 August 2026. You will get a consolidated fellowship of Rs. 60,000 per month plus HRA.
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Raja Jwala Prasad Post-Doctoral Fellowship Recruitment 2026 - 32 Posts
BHU, recognized by the Ministry of Education as an Institution of Eminence, has released Advertisement No. SRICC/RJP-PDF/2026-27 inviting applications for 32 one-year Post-Doctoral Fellow positions spread across Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Economics, and Medical Science departments. Each position is tied to a specific faculty mentor, and one additional post (RJP-019 in Anatomy, Institute of Medical Science) is being re-advertised for a remaining 9-month term after the earlier selected candidate resigned — this post needs experience in advanced molecular biology techniques such as Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), CGH Array, and Sanger sequencing, so it could be a faster route into the fellowship if your background matches. You will get access to BHU's Central Discovery Centre, which has cutting-edge equipment like FACS, Flow Cytometer, High-Resolution FE-SEM, and a 600 MHz NMR system — a strong pick for researchers who want serious lab infrastructure to support their post-doctoral work. This scale of recruitment is fairly uncommon for a single university's postdoctoral scheme in India, giving you a choice of 32 different research tracks to apply for in one round, spanning pure sciences, life sciences, medical research, and social sciences.
Vacancy Breakdown by Department
The 32 posts are spread across 12 broad departments/institutes at BHU, with Physics and Zoology carrying the most openings this year:
- Physics: 7 posts
- Zoology: 5 posts
- Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development: 4 posts
- Institute of Medical Science (Anatomy, Microbiology, Surgical Oncology, Experimental Medicine): 4 posts
- Botany: 3 posts
- Chemistry: 3 posts
- Mathematics: 1 post
- Geography: 1 post
- Geology: 1 post
- Biochemistry: 1 post
- Bioinformatics: 1 post
- Economics: 1 post
Each post has its own specific PhD subject requirement tied to the mentor's research area — check the full notification for the exact post code you are eligible for.
Who Can Apply?
- PhD Degree: You must hold a PhD from an Indian University/Institute with a NIRF ranking up to 50 (overall or in the relevant subject area), OR from a university ranked in the top 500 globally (QS or THE rankings), OR from an Institution of National Importance.
- Publications: You need at least 2 research papers published in Q1 or Q2 journals, or in SCOPUS/Web of Science indexed journals.
- Subject Match: Your PhD subject must match the specific mentor/department requirement for the post code you choose (see Vacancy Breakdown above).
For example, RJP-051 (Botany, Mahila Mahavidyalaya) needs an M.Sc in Botany/Bioinformatics/Biotechnology with expertise in cyanobacteria research, while RJP-081 (Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences) needs a PhD in Mathematics or Physics with research experience in Cosmology. Other posts cover specializations like plant molecular biology, cancer biology, atmospheric science, nuclear physics, quantum dot synthesis, and environmental chemistry — so read the post code list in the official notification carefully before deciding which mentor's project best matches your research background and publication record.
Salary
- You will get a consolidated fellowship of Rs. 60,000 per month.
- You will also get House Rent Allowance (HRA) of Rs. 10,000 per month.
- A yearly contingency grant of Rs. 50,000 (paid on a pro-rata basis) is provided for research-related expenses like consumables, travel to conferences, and lab supplies.
Selection Process
Selection for the RJP-PDF is based on the following:
- Eligibility Screening: Your application is screened based on your PhD institute's ranking, your subject match with the mentor's department, and your research publication record in Q1/Q2 or Scopus/Web of Science journals.
