CSIR-NEIST Junior Stenographer and JSA Recruitment 2026: Overview

CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Jorhat — an autonomous laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology — is hiring for two administrative support posts under Advertisement No. 05/2026-REC: Junior Stenographer and Junior Secretariat Assistant (Stores & Purchase). The institute runs multidisciplinary R&D programmes across basic and applied sciences from its Jorhat campus and two branch laboratories, and these posts support that day-to-day administrative and secretarial work. Both posts carry reserved seats — one Junior Stenographer post is reserved for candidates with benchmark disabilities, and the lone Junior Secretariat Assistant post is reserved for Ex-Servicemen. Candidates who have finished Class 12 and can clear the post-specific proficiency test can apply.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Junior Stenographer (JST-01): handles secretarial and stenographic assistance, typing and general office work at the Jorhat campus.
  • Junior Secretariat Assistant – Stores & Purchase (JSA-02): supports the Stores & Purchase section with day-to-day administrative work.

Post-wise Duties

Junior Stenographer

You will provide stenographic and secretarial assistance to your reporting officer, type correspondence and notes, and handle other office work as assigned.

Junior Secretariat Assistant (Stores & Purchase)

You will assist the Stores & Purchase section with procurement paperwork, indenting and record-keeping, besides other official work as and when assigned.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Age cap by post: The upper age limit differs by post code — see the eligibility details above for the exact limit that applies to your chosen post.
  • Posting: Selected candidates can be posted at CSIR-NEIST's Jorhat main campus or at either of its two branch laboratories in Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) or Imphal (Manipur), as per institute requirement.
  • Probation: Two years from the date of joining, extendable or curtailable at the institute's discretion, with confirmation after successful completion.
  • NOC required: Candidates already working in CSIR, government departments, PSUs or autonomous bodies must upload a No Objection Certificate — with vigilance clearance — from their current employer, or their application will not be considered.
  • Multiple post codes: If you want to apply for both posts, you must submit a separate application and a separate fee payment for each post code.
  • No canvassing: Canvassing in any form, or using political or other influence, disqualifies a candidate.
  • Language note: If the Hindi and English versions of the notification differ, the English version is final.

Application Submission Notes

Applications are accepted only online through the CSIR-NEIST website — there is no offline or postal route. Government, PSU and autonomous-body employees need to upload the No Objection Certificate mentioned above along with their qualification and category documents. Keep your fee payment receipt safe, since you'll need to quote the transaction number in the form.

परीक्षा पैटर्न

Both posts are filled through a competitive written examination (OMR or computer-based, objective MCQ type, set in English and Hindi except the English-language section) plus a post-specific proficiency test. Papers are at Class 10+2 standard.

Junior Stenographer

The written exam has 200 questions in one paper with three parts: General Intelligence & Reasoning (50 questions, 50 marks), General Awareness (50 questions, 50 marks) and English Language & Comprehension (100 questions, 100 marks). You get 2 hours to complete it (2 hours 40 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates).

Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong answer.

After the written exam, you take a stenography proficiency test: a 10-minute dictation at 80 words per minute, with 50 minutes to transcribe in English or 65 minutes in Hindi. This test only qualifies you — your final merit rank is based on written-exam marks among candidates who clear it.

You also need to clear a computer typing proficiency test: 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi, in a 10-minute test. This test only qualifies you for the written-exam merit list.
