GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), under the Department of Personnel and Training, is selecting the next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE). The current vacancy arises on 1 June 2027, and the person chosen becomes the chief executive of the company, answerable to its Board of Directors, the Government and shareholders.

GRSE is a Schedule 'A' defence shipyard under the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. It builds warships and auxiliary vessels for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, and also repairs ships and makes diesel engines, portable steel bridges and green energy platforms. The company runs seven units in and around Kolkata and a diesel engine plant at Ranchi, and it received Navratna status in June 2026. The Government of India holds 74.50% of its shares.

This is a board-level leadership post, so it suits senior executives already at Board level in a large PSU or company, Group 'A' officers at Additional Secretary level, and senior officers of the armed forces. Experience in ship design, shipbuilding or ship repair gets preference.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Regular employment only: You must hold a regular post, not a contract or ad-hoc one, both when you apply and on the interview day.
• Turnover rule: Applicants from a State PSU, private company, JV or cooperative federation qualify only if the entity's average audited turnover is Rs. 5,000 crore or more. Private-sector candidates from listed companies get preference.
• Immediate absorption: Central Government officers, armed forces officers, All India Services officers and officers of public sector banks, financial institutions and autonomous bodies are considered only on immediate absorption basis.
• Non-functional upgrade does not count: An officer drawing the eligible pay only through NFU or the Next Below Rule, without holding the substantive post, cannot apply.
• Undertaking to join: You must give an undertaking that you will join if selected. Refusing after the interview or after the offer debars you from Board-level posts in any CPSE for two years, and no relaxation is allowed.
• Tenure: The appointment lasts five years from joining, or up to superannuation, or until further orders, whichever comes first.
• Vigilance clearance: Your cadre controlling authority forwards your application only if you are clear from the vigilance angle, with the CVC's 13-point vigilance profile attached.
