Maharashtra Highway Police Law Officer Recruitment 2026: Overview
The Office of the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Maharashtra State, which runs the Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police, wants one Law Officer (Group A) on a purely contractual basis. The post sits at the force's headquarters in the "Nishchay" building at Byculla (East), Mumbai, and its job is to handle every legal matter that reaches the office — court cases, service disputes, departmental inquiries and appeals.
This is a role for a practising advocate with solid experience in criminal and service law. You will work alongside government pleaders on cases where the State is a party, draft affidavits, study adverse judgments and help police stations register FIRs in sensitive matters. The highway force works through 62 Traffic Aid Posts and five regional offices, so the legal desk in Mumbai supports matters from across the state.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Purely contractual: You will not be treated as a government employee or officer. You sign a contract agreement before joining, and no allowance is paid apart from the consolidated pay and the fixed telephone and travel amount.
- Contract length: The first contract runs for 11 months. If needed, it can be extended in 11-month spells up to three times; after the third extension you must go through a fresh selection.
- Private practice: During the contract you cannot take up any private legal work without written permission from the appointing authority. Continuing practice after permission is refused, in a way that hurts government work, can end the appointment without notice.
- Serving government staff: People currently in government service are not eligible. Earlier government service where you directly handled legal work counts only towards experience.
- Languages: You need a very good command of Marathi, Hindi and English.
- Court case condition: The appointment is subject to the final order of the Supreme Court in the State's Special Leave Petition (Civil) 34788-34789/2012.
- Who runs the selection: The recruitment is handled through the office of the Additional Director General of Police, Training and Special Units, Maharashtra.
- Verification: Shortlisted candidates fill an attestation form, and the contract is offered only after character and antecedent verification.
- No travel allowance: You bear your own travel costs for the written test and interview.
- Exam hall rules: Mobile phones and any electronic or communication devices are strictly banned at the test and interview.
- False information: Anyone giving wrong details is barred from this and all future selections of the office.

परीक्षा स्वरूप
Selection is through a written exam of 50 marks and an interview of 25 marks. Your written and interview marks are added together, and the merit list is made on the total. You need at least 60% marks to be considered for appointment.
Topics for the Written Exam and Interview
- Service and criminal cases: matters of a service and criminal nature
- Prosecution sanction: sanction to prosecute in Anti-Corruption Bureau trap cases, or under Section 197 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the Motor Vehicles Act or the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999
- Current legal position: settled law on key issues in service and criminal cases
- Long-answer drafting: drafting an affidavit to be filed in court in a service or criminal case
- Para-wise remarks: para-wise comments or a short affidavit in a case before the High Court or the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal
Exam Type: Multiple-choice questions plus long-answer drafting.
Exam Date: You will be told by letter at least 15 days before the written exam; the date will also be posted on the office website.
