SCI Assistant Medical Officer Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI) is hiring Assistant Medical Officers on contract for its Mumbai Head Office, Maritime Training Institute and regional offices in Chennai and Kolkata. The work supports both shore employees and seafarers in SCI’s shipping operations. The engagement combines scheduled office hours with medical advice for vessels when requested.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Contract length: You will be engaged for two years from joining. SCI may grant two further extensions of three months each at its discretion; the contract does not create a claim to permanent appointment.
• City of work: The Head Office and Maritime Training Institute positions are in Mumbai. The regional-office positions are in Chennai and Kolkata. SCI can deploy you elsewhere within the city for which you were appointed.
• Mumbai schedule: The Head Office and Maritime Training Institute engagements involve three hours daily, Monday to Friday. The specified slots are 10 am to 1 pm or 2 pm to 5 pm.
• Regional-office schedule: At Chennai and Kolkata, you work two hours daily from Monday to Friday. The office and you will agree on a slot within normal office working hours.
• Continuing approval: Your Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) approval must remain valid throughout the contract. Letting it lapse would conflict with the terms of the appointment.
• Leave: The annual leave allocation is 30 days, comprising 18 days of privilege leave, 8 casual-leave days and 4 restricted holidays. Casual leave and restricted holidays lapse at the end of the calendar year; extension-period leave is proportionate.
• Facilities: SCI does not provide company accommodation or company medical benefits for this contract. Workplace accidents are covered under the company’s existing group insurance arrangement.
• Ending the contract: Either side may end the engagement with one month’s notice or notice pay. SCI can decline to accept a resignation or termination notice where disciplinary proceedings are pending or contemplated.
• Existing SCI doctors: Current Assistant Medical Officers can also apply if they meet the advertised conditions. A waitlist may be used if a selected doctor does not join or later leaves.
• Recruitment changes: SCI can change the number of positions or cancel the engagement exercise. Updates and amendments will appear on its website, so keep checking it along with your email.

• Examine shore employees and seafarers and issue the appropriate medical-fitness certificates.
• Check hospital bills, medical claims and sick-leave reports, including approvals in SAP.
• Arrange medicines and help certify medicine chests for vessels.
• Keep examination records, retain certificate copies and send weekly statements to management.
• Provide round-the-clock medical guidance to vessel masters when requested and monitor sick crew members.
• Coordinate hospital care, follow-up treatment and medical escorts in India or abroad when needed.
• Assess medical disability cases and advise SCI on maritime medical rules and related claims.
• Help select medical staff and empanelled healthcare providers as directed in the notice.
