Who Can Apply?

• Government Service: You must currently hold, or have previously held, any post under the Government.

• Re-appointment: Ex-Special Judicial Magistrates applying for re-appointment must submit their four best judgments delivered while holding the post of SJM/SMM.
• Character Roll: Character roll entries are not required for ex-SJMs already appointed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Note: the eligibility criteria are broad — you do not need to have served specifically in the judiciary or a legal department. Any current or former Government post qualifies, as long as you also hold a law degree or have legal experience the High Court considers satisfactory.

Age Limit

• No separate minimum or maximum age is specified for applying, but the term of office is four years from the date of taking charge, or until the officer turns 70 years old, whichever comes first.

Salary

• Selected Special Judicial Magistrates get a fixed honorarium of Rs. 45,000 per month.
• You will also get Rs. 5,000 per month as a conveyance allowance.

Selection Process

There is no written exam for this post. Selection is based on document scrutiny and merit review:

1. Application Scrutiny by District Judge: The District Judge of the district you are applying for checks your application and documents.
2. Forwarding to High Court: The District Judge forwards only suitable applications to the High Court, along with their remarks.
3. Final Selection by High Court: The High Court takes the final call on your appointment.

How to Apply

1. Download the application form from the Allahabad High Court website.
2. Fill in your personal details, government service history and educational qualifications.
3. Attach self-attested photocopies of your documents and character roll entries for the last 5 years of government service (not required for ex-SJMs previously appointed by the UP Government).
4. Submit your complete application to the District Judge of the district you are applying for — not directly to the High Court.

Note: Applications sent directly to the High Court will be rejected and not processed further. The District Judge, after proper scrutiny, forwards only the applications he finds fit for the post of SJM to the High Court along with his remarks.
