The Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology, Pondicherry University is hiring for a research project funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Government of India. The study, titled "Exploration and Documentation of Isopod Parasitism Among Fishes in the Island Ecosystems of Andaman and Lakshadweep", runs for three years under Dr. K. A. Jayaraj, Associate Professor and Principal Investigator. The work is based at the university's Brookshabad Campus in Port Blair, and it takes you into island reef and fishery ecosystems that very few research groups in the country get to survey. Two posts are open — one for a doctorate-level researcher and one for a science graduate who wants a first real taste of field and laboratory research.

Posts and Disciplines

• Research Associate (Code R01): the senior scientific position on the project, open to candidates holding a Ph.D. in Marine Biology. Anyone who has already worked on parasitic isopods gets preference, since the whole study turns on identifying and documenting these fish parasites.
• Project Assistant (Code P01): the support position, open to graduates in Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology or Microbiology. A post graduate degree in the concerned subject, hands-on molecular laboratory experience and SCUBA certification are all treated as added advantages — useful, because sampling happens in the water, not only in the lab.

Both posts sit with the same department and the same principal investigator, so you apply to whichever one matches your qualification.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Nature of appointment: both posts are temporary. The engagement lasts a maximum of three years or ends with the project, whichever comes first.
• Where you will work: the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, or wherever else the project requires you to be — the study also covers the Lakshadweep island ecosystem.
• Allowances: House Rent Allowance is paid as per Government of India rules on top of the fellowship.
• Tax: the amount you are paid is taxable.
• Governing rules: terms and conditions follow Pondicherry University and ANRF or DST, Government of India guidelines, not a private contract.
• Travel: no TA or DA is paid under any circumstances, including for attending the interview.
