NLUJA Lawyer Fellowship Recruitment 2026: Overview

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJA) is running its Lawyer Fellowship Programme with the Azim Premji Foundation for advocates practising in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. This is a field-based fellowship that connects legal practice in the region with support from senior lawyers and university faculty.

The programme focuses on customary legal systems, special constitutional arrangements and access to justice in remote districts. You will be part of a regional network that brings local disputes and wider rights concerns into the same learning space.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: The fellowship runs for one year. You must commit to the full programme and a placement in a designated district. It combines field placement with learning blocks at the university.
• Blended format: You attend periodic in-person sessions at NLUJA in Assam and weekly online sessions. The programme therefore includes campus participation alongside work in your assigned district or block.
• Mentorship: A senior mentor supports your development through the fellowship. Mentors may be senior or High Court advocates, or lawyers experienced in rights-based work, with university faculty also involved in the programme.
• Professional network: The fellowship connects practitioners across the North-East. Its field arrangements involve Legal Services Authorities, non-governmental organisations and community groups, linking your placement to local access-to-justice work.
• Academic access: In-person blocks include advanced workshops and access to the university's academic resources and legal databases. These are part of the programme's support for practical learning.
• Completion: NLUJA awards a Certificate of Fellowship with an end-line impact brief. A recommendation letter may also be available to fellows who complete the programme with distinction.
• Representation: At least 40% of fellows will be women, and at least 30% will come from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other marginalised backgrounds. The programme also considers balance across districts.
• Inclusive participation: The university particularly encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities and marginalised communities. These commitments sit alongside the programme's focus on public-interest practice.
