MERC CGRF Independent Member Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) is looking for Independent Members for two of its Consumer Grievance Redressal Forums (CGRFs) in the MSEDCL Amravati and Wardha circles of Vidarbha. These forums work under Section 42(5) of the Electricity Act, 2003 and hear the complaints electricity consumers raise against their power distribution company.

The Independent Member is the consumer-side voice on the forum, so this post suits people who have spent years on consumer rights work. You need a long record of handling consumer grievances, and members of registered consumer protection groups, NGOs and industrial associations get preference. The appointment follows the MERC (CGRF and Electricity Ombudsman) Regulations, 2020, as amended in 2024.

Posts and Disciplines

• Amravati Circle (MSEDCL): Independent Member seat on the forum that serves MSEDCL consumers in the Amravati circle.
• Wardha Circle (MSEDCL): Independent Member seat on the forum that serves MSEDCL consumers in the Wardha circle.

Both seats carry the same monthly amount, and people who live in the area of the forum get preference for that location.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: a fixed three-year term. The Commission may extend it by up to two more years, within the overall age ceiling set by the regulations.
• Cooling-off rule: you must not have worked in any capacity for the distribution licensee, or given consultancy to electricity consumers, in the three years before your appointment.
• Marathi: you must be well conversant with Marathi, since the forum deals with local consumers.
• Preference: candidates recommended by a registered Voluntary Consumer Protection Organisation, a registered NGO working on consumer grievances in the area, or a CGRF Chairperson are preferred.
• Consolidated pay: the monthly amount already covers sitting fees, honorarium, conveyance and telephone charges. Tax is deducted at source. Holding additional charge of another CGRF brings extra pay plus TA/DA at Chief Engineer level.
• Location choice: you can name up to five preferred locations, but the Commission may place you at any other vacant forum after the interview discussion.
• Background check: MERC verifies the integrity and background of applicants. Canvassing disqualifies you, and false details can lead to dismissal even after appointment.

Write "Application for the post of Independent Member, CGRF" on the envelope. It must reach the office by 5:00 PM on the closing day, and one application covers both locations. Late, incomplete or other-mode applications are not considered.
