ESIC Tirunelveli Specialist and Senior Resident Recruitment 2026: Overview

Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital, Vannarpettai, Tirunelveli is engaging Super Specialists, Specialists and Senior Residents on contract through a rolling walk-in advertisement. ESIC runs this hospital under the Ministry of Labour and Employment to treat insured workers and their families in south Tamil Nadu. Instead of one interview day, there are three monthly walk-in rounds — posts that stay unfilled after one round roll over to the next, and ESIC uploads the updated vacancy list on its website before each round. PG doctors looking for a contract post in Tirunelveli, and senior consultants who want part-time work, can both apply.

Posts and Disciplines

• Super Specialist (Full Time or Part Time): one post each in Surgical Oncology and Medical Oncology for doctors with an M.Ch or DM.
• Specialist (Full Time or Part Time): consultant posts in Anaesthesiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Ophthalmology, General Medicine, Orthopaedics, Radiology, Surgery and Psychiatry. Full-time candidates get priority over part-time ones for both specialist grades.
• Senior Resident (3 Years): the biggest group, with most seats in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Medicine, Orthopaedics and Surgery, plus Anaesthesiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Dermatology, Paediatrics and Radiology.
• Senior Resident (1 Year): posts in Accident and Emergency, open to MBBS doctors with hospital experience.

Post-wise Duties

Super Specialist

You will be in charge of every patient treated under your super-speciality. Part-time super specialists work at least 16 hours a week (four hours a day as the Medical Superintendent assigns) and stay on call round the clock.

Specialist

You will run the consultant work of your department — OPD, ward patients and procedures — and remain responsible for the cases under your care.

Senior Resident

You will handle ward, OPD and emergency duties as the Medical Superintendent assigns, working under the hospital's residency rules.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• MBBS route for some SR seats: If no PG doctor turns up for General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Surgery, an MBBS doctor with two years' experience (one in that speciality, at a government or private hospital, not a clinic) can be picked for a 1-year Senior Resident post instead.
• Tenure: Super specialist and 3-year SR contracts start for one year and can be renewed yearly up to three years. The 1-year SR post lasts one year or until a regular medical officer joins.
• Past residents: Doctors who have already finished three years under the Central Senior Residency Scheme cannot apply for Senior Resident.
• Security deposit: Selected Senior Residents give a DD of Rs. 30,000 (3-year SR) or Rs. 15,000 (1-year SR) in favour of "ESIC A/c No 1", payable at Tirunelveli; it is forfeited if you leave within nine months.
• Indemnity cover: Super specialists must hold a professional indemnity policy of at least Rs. 30 lakh a year and submit the premium receipt within seven days of joining.
• Private practice: Not allowed for full-time super specialists or Senior Residents.
• Registration: You must be registered with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council or NMC/MCI before joining.
• Reserved seats: If no SC, ST, OBC or EWS candidate is available, a meritorious candidate may be engaged for 44 days. Five posts are horizontally reserved for PwBD candidates with at least 40% disability.
• No extras: No TA/DA for the interview or joining, no hostel or quarters, and no PF, pension, gratuity or claim to regularisation.
• Joining: You must join within seven days of the selection order and sign a contract on Rs. 100 stamp paper. Either side can end the contract with one month's notice.
