ICMR Scientific Consultant Recruitment 2026: Overview
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is engaging Scientific Consultants for its Division of Reproductive, Child Health and Nutrition at headquarters in New Delhi. The council works under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. This is a temporary consultancy engagement, with medical and non-medical streams covered by the same notification.
Posts and Disciplines
- Consultant (Scientific-Medical): The medical stream sits within the division's reproductive, child-health and nutrition work at ICMR headquarters.
- Consultant (Scientific-Non Medical): The non-medical stream relates to areas such as nutrition, public health, epidemiology and health science within the same division.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Contract period: The engagement lasts one year. You cannot claim an extension or regular appointment on the strength of this consultancy.
- Employment status: The contract does not give you the status of an ICMR employee or official. Keep this distinction in mind when considering the engagement.
- Working hours: The stated office hours run from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm. You receive 1.5 days of paid leave for each completed month of service.
- Ending the contract: ICMR can end the engagement at any time without advance notice or a stated reason. In the normal course, either side may end it with at least one month's notice.
- Institutional rules: You must follow ICMR's norms throughout the contract. Breaking these conditions can lead to penalties, including termination.
- Confidentiality and conduct: ICMR expects honesty, office confidentiality and sincere work. Unsatisfactory service or a conflict of interest with the council or Government of India can lead to immediate discontinuation.
- Joining undertaking: You must sign an undertaking covering the conduct and conflict-of-interest conditions before joining. These obligations continue through your engagement.
- Insurance: You are responsible for arranging and paying for insurance needed to meet your contractual obligations. The notice also places responsibility for suitable personal life, health and other cover on you.
- Attending selection: You must arrange your own travel and accommodation. ICMR will not reimburse travel or daily expenses for attending the test or interview.
- Recruitment discretion: The competent authority may cancel the engagement exercise at any stage without giving a reason. The consultancy follows ICMR's notified consultant-hiring guidelines.
- Further updates: Check ICMR's website for any addendum, correction or further information. The council says it will not issue a separate press notification for these updates.

If more than 30 candidates apply for a post, you take a written test with 50 multiple-choice questions carrying 1 mark each, for 50 marks. Questions relate to the duties of the position.
Final ranking: When the test is held, ICMR combines written-test and personal-interview marks. With fewer than 30 applicants, selection uses the interview alone. The notice does not explain the rule for exactly 30 applicants.
Retired personnel: You attend only an interview, without a written test. Test duration, negative marking, language and a detailed subject-wise allocation are not stated.
Schedule: ICMR will publish the list of candidates who meet its requirements on its website. Your call letter will give the test or interview schedule.

You need a relevant MBBS, BDS, BVSc or equivalent degree for the medical stream, or M.Sc, MPH or equivalent in a relevant subject for the non-medical stream. Both streams need at least 12 years of post-qualification experience and proven professional competence.
Use the Google Form linked in the official notice and attach your completed application, photograph and self-attested supporting records. Include your signature and publications, if any.
The monthly consolidated fee is Rs. 1,00,000-1,50,000. The selection committee decides your amount using qualifications, experience and interview performance.
The notice gives a minimum age of 40 years and a maximum of 70 years.
