FSSAI Legal Consultant Recruitment 2026: Overview

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the statutory food regulator under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is hiring Legal Consultants on a full-time contract. The advertisement comes from FSSAI's legal division at FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi. The work covers FSSAI's court cases, regulations and legal opinions, so this suits practising lawyers who already handle litigation or advisory work. You join as an independent consultant, not as a regular FSSAI employee.

The consultants support the CEO, FSSAI and the government's law officers, and coordinate with the Department of Legal Affairs on matters that reach the courts.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Regular law degree only: An LLB earned through Open University or distance education is not accepted. Your degree and experience must be complete on the last date of applying.
• Contract tenure: The first term is one year, extendable one year at a time on performance, up to a maximum of three years.
• No permanent claim: The contract gives no right to regularisation, absorption, seniority or lien. It can be cut short for audit objections, court orders or poor performance.
• Full-time and exclusive: You cannot take up any other assignment while working with FSSAI, and you must declare before joining that none of your past or current work creates a conflict of interest.
• Working hours: Office hours run from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. You may have to stay late or come in on weekends and holidays, with no compensatory leave.
• Leave: You earn 2 days of leave for each completed month. Unused leave lapses at the end of the calendar year.
• Confidentiality: The Official Secrets Act, 1923 applies to you, and you cannot publish or broadcast anything about your FSSAI work without permission.
• Notice period: In the normal course either side gives one month's notice to end the contract.
• Police verification: A negative police verification report ends the contract immediately.
• Insurance and tax: You arrange your own life and health insurance. FSSAI deducts income tax at source, and GST is payable to you where applicable.
• Reserve panel: FSSAI may keep a reserve panel to fill a seat if a selected consultant does not join or leaves early.

• Handle, monitor and coordinate FSSAI's pending cases before courts and tribunals
• Draft, vet and review regulations, agreements, MoUs, contracts, tenders, SOPs and advisories
• Give legal opinions on rules, statutory provisions, court judgments and orders
• Draft counter-affidavits, petitions and other pleadings, coordinating with MoHFW and the Department of Legal Affairs
• Check professional fee bills of empanelled law firms and advocates against the fee rules
• Prepare briefing notes and case briefs for the CEO, FSSAI and law officers such as ASGs, SG and AG
• Research and draft on other legal matters assigned by FSSAI or MoHFW
